The words “cannibal” and “meat-eater” describe what the black people are trying to express, by the way they felt towards whites. While their four faces are shown or “introduced” the lyrics say, “the harvest left no food for you to eat / You cannibal, you meat-eater, you see / But I have seen the same / I know the shame in your defeat.” Through their discourse, they are exploring history and bring forth the idea of race or internalized racism.

In this case, I think it is safe to say the “I” would be the black people and the “you” the white. The parts in the song describing the “you” and the “I” can also be confusing because the black and white singers switch off and on with the lyrics. The first time I watched it as just a love-of-the-song kind of viewer, I was completely flabbergasted. For the audience, this may be a very confusing act. In this very alarming video that can be accessed on YouTube, Mumford and Sons hand off their instruments to four African Americans indicating they may be the ones who need to sing the lyrics. In doing so, the band does a very good job of persuading the audience to look further into these issues such as internalized racism. They are trying to slap the viewer in the face to wake them up and realize there are much more complex issues than the ones we constantly obsess about. Mumford and Sons express through their lyrics and video the social and economical problems in the world. Watching the video of “The Cave” brings up arguments that bell hooks would engage in.

The song we will look more closely into is “The Cave” which opens with a sort of melancholy tone and lyrics that fly like daggers into the heart saying, “It’s empty in the valley of your heart.” Mumford and Sons explores rhetoric through form and style by putting emphasis on certain words. Mumford and Sons is a folk band of four men, Marcus Mumford, Country Winston, Ben Lovett, and Ted Dwane, whose songs deal with complicated rhetoric relating to issues all around the world such as internalized racism, imperialism, relationships, and independence.
